Back from the Mara

Wowza! What an amazing trip!

For those of you new to the blog, I have just spent two weeks out in Africa racing around the plains of the world famous Masai Mara reserve (and a private conservancy next to as well). This year I was lucky enough to be joined by a fantastic group of clients I who joined me for a good portion of the trip in order to improve their photography and get some once in a lifetime images.

I am very please to say the both the wildlife and group didn’t disappoint on any level! I had visited the camp and area last year with a view to running my workshops here and they delivered in a big way and this year was even better! Myself and my partners at Safari Consultants worked very hard to get the best trip possible put together for photographers and naturalists and it is always very gratifying to see our hard work come together and work perfectly!

Firstly, super thanks to Ken, Tony, Cheryl, Robin and Chris; you all made this trip a very memorable one and it was a real treat to see that you were all as nice in person as you were on the phone!

Much of my photography (abroad and here in the UK) is dependent on local knowledge and I managed to secure two fantastic guides/drivers for my stay, so Daniel and Joseph, I think I speak for all of us when I say you did a fantastic job. I have worked with many guides all around the world and you rank right up there with the best of them! Also thanks to Chris, Rachel, Darren, Emma and James; fantastic hosts, making the trip run smoothly and always there to help! Lastly, but by no means least Mary, thank you for your super amazing organising skills (as usual!).

Well, what did we see? All the cats made an appearance with the Leopard being predictably the hardest to track down. Great encounters with a Cheetah and her 3 month old cub, lions and Hyena were breathtaking. However the real stars of this show were undoubtable the Lions. This year we had some stunning encounters and we managed to work quickly and efficiently to make the most of these encounters and come away with some real winning shots. I managed to get our vehicles in all the right positions to predict where the action would be (I was right 9/10 times) which is sometimes tricky when you are putting the animals welfare first (as we ALWAYS DO!), this is out top priority and why I choose the guides I have, they are fantastic at respecting the Mara’s wildlife.

We had spectacular Lion sightings this year!

I have just backed up the RAWs to the RAID drive and taking the spares offsite later today. However I have managed to pick out a few highlights from the trip for you below. I will be posting more images over the next few weeks as well as some video and a monster gigapixel panoramic or two of the migration. Please keep up to date by liking my faceboook page and checking back here on the blog.

If you would like to come and experience the thrill of the Mara for yourself and improve your photography with me in person, I am pleased to say we are running another tour next year.

You can see details on the tour section of the website here. We have already booked up a few places prior to the official announcement, so please get in touch asap if you are interested (there is no obligation with any enquiry and all trips are fully ATOL bonded with our partners Safari Consultants)

So until later I will leave you with the stars of the show.. A LOT more images to come so please stay tuned!
